Serving Our Community…

OVERVIEW OF OUR OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY

Westminster responds to local concerns in many ways.  Each month we collect for the Des Moines Area Religioius Council's Emergency Food Pantry. Weekly classes for Latina women with small children are provided to help them cope with issues of domestic abuse, poverty and language.  We mentor at-risk children through the Everybody Wins literacy program, whose offices are located on the main level of our building.  On the church’s lower level, we house and provide volunteer support for the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), a shelter for homeless families.

Our summer day-camps for inner-city kids provide nurture and enjoyment.  We regularly cook and serve meals for the homeless in our community.  Westminster also sponsors a summer mission internship program called SUMMIT for college students.  SUMMIT participants receive education grants and valuable life experience.

Westminster is a "SHARE Iowa" Site

Would you like to save money on groceries? Do you know someone who could benefit from stretching his or her food dollars?  Try SHARE Iowa! Begun in 1992, SHARE Iowa is a non-profit organization that provide families with quality food at a savings (up to 50% over store prices) and encourages volunteerism for our community. Westminster is a SHARE provider for monthly food packages.  Orders and payments for SHARE food packages will be taken one Sunday each month in The Commons before and after worship.   If you have questions, e-mail Lynda.  For more information about SHARE Iowa, click here.
