Buried Treasure

written by Rev. Dr. Scott Paczkowski

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.
— James 1:17

Last week, I was home alone, and it was almost as bad as the movie. Jill was in Omaha taking care of our older grandson after tonsil surgery. In the evening, I would check Facebook after getting yet another notice. I slipped over to “Video,” and what came up became an evening obsession. I got sucked into watching old videos of “America’s God Talent” and “Britain’s Got Talent.” This week was my first experience watching either show. I liked watching it on Facebook because it only showed the talented contestants.

As I binge-watched, I was surprised at how many contestants were recovering from cancer, bullying, financial instability, or some other painful situation. I found myself deeply moved by their courage and willingness to risk rejection to offer their gifts to those watching. Admittedly, I only watched the success stories, but they were inspiring. Seemingly broken people, standing emotionally naked on an empty stage before 3,000 people in person and millions at home. Over and over, these nervous individuals would stand alone, shaking in place. Then, the music would begin, and their voice would fill the auditorium to life with their magical offering.

Each video segment provided another example of the human spirit empowered by sharing one’s treasure. Some singers had undeniable natural ability. Others had trained voices that provided access to their heart. Each one sang their pain and resilient power so profoundly that the listener experienced the singers’ emotions. The performers’ gift of vulnerable honesty inspired the listeners’ courage, so they, too, might share the treasure buried deep within the performers’ souls.

God provides each of us with a divine gift worthy of inspiring others. As children of God, each person has buried treasure within that, when tapped, transforms others. The challenge is to find our treasure and then how to share it in a meaningful way. First, name your talents. Second, be open to new opportunities and skills yet unknown. Third, prayerfully ask the One who gave you your treasure to unlock it so you can make a difference in God’s name. You probably won't star on America’s Got Talent, but God will find a way for you to share your treasure with others so those around you can experience the blessing that is the divine gift of your unique treasure.
